Infrastructure Solutions Engineer

Summary
An Infrastructure Solutions Engineer at Planet acts as the first point of contact for internal engineering teams facing infrastructure blockers, executing cloud migrations and building Terraform modules, Helm charts, and Go/Python tooling to make Planet's platform easier to adopt and operate.
- An Infrastructure Solutions Engineer makes Planet’s infrastructure easier to use. Infra Solutions is a small, multi-disciplinary team: engineers who are as comfortable operating a system as building one, and as comfortable in a hard conversation as in a code review
- We sit between the teams who build Planet’s platform capabilities and the teams who need them, and our market is every engineering team at Planet, which we earn one engagement at a time. Teams work with us because we make their week lighter, not because anyone told them to, and every team that lands on the platform is infrastructure Planet no longer has to duplicate, secure and pay for
- This role carries the day to day of that. You are often the first person a team reaches when something infrastructure-shaped is in their way, and you are the one who does the work to clear it: reading someone else’s stack well enough to be useful, running the migration step, writing the module, answering the question in a way that stops it being asked a third time
- A senior engineer works alongside you on the parts that are still ambiguous, so you are not expected to walk into a fogged problem alone
- You will spend a lot of your time in other teams’ repositories, channels and problems. This is a role driven by unreasonable hospitality (value out of proportion to what anyone asked us for) and built on solid engineering and operational fundamentals
- Serve as the primary point of contact for cross-engineering infrastructure requests, resolving immediate blockers and triaging complex issues to core platform owners
- Execute complex workload and storage migrations across cloud environments, creating proof-of-concepts, configuration ports, and repeatable migration playbooks
- Drive scoped technical deliverables within team engagements, collaborating with capability owners and internal partners to complete infrastructure objectives
- Develop infrastructure tooling, Terraform modules, Helm charts, CLIs, and client libraries in Go and Python to enable standardized platform adoption
- Create technical documentations, runbooks, and worked examples to reduce recurring engineering support queries
- Instrument observability dashboards and reporting tools to provide engineering teams visibility into infrastructure cost, capacity, and usage
Benefits
- Comprehensive health plan
- Wellness program and massages
- Flexible time off
- Recognition programs
- Commuter benefits
- Learning and tuition reimbursement
- Parental leave
- Offsites and happy hours
- Volunteering benefits
- Experience deploying, managing, and troubleshooting workloads on Kubernetes in production environments
- Experience operating within public cloud platforms, preferably Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
- 4+ years of experience in Platform Engineering, DevOps, System Administration, Site Reliability Engineering, or a related infrastructure discipline
- Experience using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Crossplane) and GitOps tooling (Helm, ArgoCD) alongside CI/CD pipelines (GitLab)
- Ability to drive cross-functional projects to completion and communicate technical updates across team boundaries
- Proficiency in software development using Go or Python for automation and tooling
- If this job intrigues you, but you’re thinking you might not have all the qualifications, please… do apply! At Planet, we are looking for well-rounded people from around the world who can contribute to more ways than just what is listed in this job description
- Familiarity with workflow orchestration frameworks (e.g., Temporal) or large-scale batch data processing pipelines
- Experience in a developer enablement, platform support, or internal tooling role serving software engineers
- Experience with large-scale block storage technologies (e.g., GCP Persistent Disk, Hyperdisk, Ceph)
- Exposure to enterprise observability stack configuration and telemetry practices
- This posting may be removed earlier than projected if a suitable pool of applications has been received. For this reason, we recommend applying as soon as you are able to
- Planet embraces Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, and we encourage its responsible use. We understand that candidates may use various resources, including AI tools, to prepare for interviews and assessments
- However, during any live interview stage or when actively completing assessments for this position, the use of AI tools—e.g. Large Language Models (LLMs), deep fake technology, etc.—is strictly prohibited unless explicitly prompted by an interviewer or assessment instructions
