Lead Bicycle Mechanic / Technical Quality Lead
Compensation: $50k – $85k • 0.05% – 0.1%
Help Set the Standard for Bicycle Maintenance
Cyclaa is building the operating system for cyclists and their bikes: a connected platform designed to simplify bike ownership, maintenance, professional services, and community.
We're beginning with a maintenance and repair marketplace in New York City, connecting cyclists with trusted mechanics while creating a better, more transparent service experience. But a marketplace is only as good as the professionals behind it.
That's why we're looking for an experienced Lead Bicycle Mechanic / Technical Quality Lead to help build the standards, training systems, and quality controls that will define Cyclaa's service network. This is an opportunity for a skilled bicycle professional to influence how an entirely new service platform operates, not simply work through a repair queue.
You'll serve as Cyclaa's primary bicycle service subject-matter expert, working closely with the Founder & CEO, Head of Marketplace Operations, and CTO.
Your mission is to make sure Cyclaa's maintenance services are technically sound, consistently delivered, and worthy of customer trust.
You'll help establish what services should be offered, how they should be performed, how mechanics should be evaluated, and what information should be captured for every bike.
Initially, the position will combine hands-on mechanical assessments, service standards development, mechanic training, and quality oversight.
As Cyclaa expands, this role has the potential to become a broader technical service leadership function.
Technical Service Standards
- Define Cyclaa's initial bicycle maintenance and repair service catalog.
- Develop standardized procedures for safety checks, tune-ups, adjustments, and common repairs.
- Establish clear service scopes, expected completion standards, and necessary documentation.
- Create inspection and quality-control checklists for participating mechanics.
- Develop objective procedures for identifying safety-critical mechanical issues.
- Establish appropriate repair scope limitations, including when specialized qualifications or equipment are required.
- Help define pricing and labor-time assumptions for common service categories.
- Ensure service procedures account for manufacturer specifications and relevant safety guidance. Mechanic Vetting, Training & Development
- Conduct or oversee technical assessments of prospective Cyclaa mechanics.
- Develop a practical skills evaluation covering relevant repair competencies.
- Help establish mechanic approval criteria and service-level permissions.
- Create onboarding materials, training resources, and technical reference guides.
- Train participating mechanics on Cyclaa's documentation and customer experience standards.
- Identify skills gaps and recommend appropriate training or restrictions.
- Establish a consistent process for evaluating service quality and mechanic performance.
- Support a culture of professionalism, technical competence, and continuous learning.
Hands-On Mechanical Expertise
- Perform or supervise selected bicycle inspections, repairs, and technical evaluations.
- Provide expertise in brakes, shifting, drivetrains, wheels, tires, bearings, basic fit-related mechanical adjustments, and general bike safety.
- Evaluate road, commuter, gravel, hybrid, and other relevant bicycle service requirements.
- Guide appropriate approaches to tubeless tires, disc brakes, electronic shifting, and other modern bicycle systems.
- Help establish safe service boundaries for e-bikes, including when specialized electrical or battery-system expertise is required.
- Support complex troubleshooting, rework evaluations, and technical customer escalations.
- Evaluate the suitability of parts, tools, and equipment for approved services. Product & Service Experience
- Collaborate with the CTO to ensure the platform collects useful bike and service information.
- Help define the bicycle profile and maintenance-history data model.
- Establish standards for recording repairs, component replacements, safety observations, and service recommendations.
- Contribute expert knowledge to maintenance reminder logic and future predictive maintenance features.
- Ensure customer-facing maintenance recommendations are technically credible and appropriately qualified.
- Help translate complex mechanical concepts into clear, accessible language for cyclists.
- Participate in product testing and feedback sessions from a mechanic's perspective. Marketplace Quality & Expansion
- Partner with Operations to investigate customer complaints, repair quality issues, and service disputes.
- Conduct periodic quality reviews and recommend corrective action where needed.
- Develop processes for service rework, technical escalations, and recurring quality concerns.
- Help define professional standards that can be repeated in additional geographic markets.
- Identify opportunities to improve mechanic efficiency, service consistency, and customer trust.
- Represent Cyclaa professionally in mechanic partnerships, workshops, and relevant industry interactions.
First 30 days
- Recommend an initial standardized maintenance and repair service catalog.
- Develop mechanic vetting criteria and technical assessment procedures.
- Create draft quality-control and safety inspection checklists.
- Identify essential training and equipment requirements.
- Assist with onboarding and assessing the initial mechanic network.
- Support the launch and quality monitoring of pilot services.
- Identify common quality issues and operational improvements.
- Develop consistent service documentation and customer-facing standards. Days 31–60
- Refine service playbooks based on actual pilot results.
- Establish a repeatable mechanic training and assessment framework.
- Define ongoing quality monitoring procedures.
- Recommend the next service categories and technical capabilities to introduce.

- Interest in technology-enabled service platforms.
- Shape the service model: Help establish the mechanical standards of a new cycling marketplace.
- Influence the product: Your expertise will directly inform bike profiles, service histories, and future maintenance technology.
- Be a trusted authority: Help build a network known for professionalism and quality.
- Grow with the platform: Contribute to systems that can eventually support mechanics across multiple markets.
- Work beyond the workshop: Apply your technical expertise to product development, operations, and marketplace strategy.
We're looking for someone who is proud of their craft, takes safety seriously, and wants to elevate the bicycle service experience.
